Uno tsunami e' stato generato dal terremoto di magnitudo 8,8 che ha colpito stamani il Cile e minaccia le coste nei pressi dell'epicentro. Lo ha reso noto il Centro di allarme tsunami del Pacifico.
Il bilancio delle vittime del sisma che ha colpito il Cile e' salito a 17. Lo affermano le autorita' cilene e la radio.
Il sisma si รจ verificato vicino Concepcion, shaking buildings and causing blackouts in some districts of the capital Santiago. They reported the U.S. Geological Survey and witnesses said.
The tsunami warning for Chile and Peru 'was issued by the Center for the Pacific tsunami warnings.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred 90 km north-east of Concepcion, at a depth of 55 km, at 3:34 am local time (7:34 in Italy). The tsunami center said in a statement that "an earthquake of this magnitude has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and those more distant in a matter of hours."
The alarm was later extended also to Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica.
Japan also issued tsunami alert for the coast of the Pacific Ocean after an earthquake off the coast of Chile announced The Japanese meteorological services.
